Local Dentist Fundraising for Ceicil

Adventure Smiles Dentistry for Children in Las Vegas is doing something really cool!  They are donating money for each lion colored at their office.   “The only Lion we want on our walls, are the ones you’ve colored! We were shocked and saddened by the recent senseless death of Cecil the Lion at the hands of an American dentist. Adventure Smiles wants to celebrate wildlife by decorating the walls with pictures of lions, our patients have colored.  Adventure Smiles will donate $1 to the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit for peach patient who colors a picture of the Lion to display in their office.” We at Moms in Vegas hope other Dentists will find ways to donate money for this important cause!  Thanks Adventure Smiles!!

Don’t Talk To Strangers in 2014

By

What Does Your “Don’t Talk To Strangers” Look Like in 2014? I am almost 40 – yep, not embarrassed to say it.  I think age is a state of mind and an adventure.  When I was 10, I remember some sort of big dog animal character coming to our school and talking  about safety with stickers and bags.  Things like “don’t talk to people you don’t know,”  “don’t get near the car if someone you don’t know is trying to talk to you,”  “don’t take food from someone you don’t know.”  The basics.  I also remember something about a razor blade in Halloween candy on the news at some point in time, but for the most part I was well cared for… I was watched after … I was rarely in a situation where someone could approach me. I also grew up in a big city (mostly) and my mom and dad would warn me about things I would see and tell me how to protect myself.  Looking back, I think that was really helpful. There is something else in my youth that was pretty scary.   Someone tried to kidnap my mom in the 50’s – yep, it happened even back then but the news didn’t sensationalize it.  That scared me pretty good. Oh and one more thing … in college three cars tried to push me off the road to car jack me and who knows what else, BUT my instincts took over and I avoided what could have been a fatal afternoon.  This has influenced me as well. OUR NOW INCLUDES NEW CHALLENGES In 2014, the continuous dialogue with my children is very different and I wanted to share it with you.  Not only do I have to talk to my kids about the birds and the bees, children their own age, bullying, inappropriate touching and the fact that all adults are not always to be trusted …. but I also have to talk to them about body image, body image in the media, self empowerment, loving yourself above all other thoughts, not letting what other people think you should be make you change who you are, being completely responsible for your actions and not letting fear or exposure to something that you feel ashamed about influence your decisions or control your life. Not to mention – the Internet and Internet safety, internet porn (inappropriate videos), chat rooms, social media traps and safety, people pretending to be someone else, texting,  phone calls, images through the phone or over the internet, voice mail, answering the phone or door, information you don’t give out, constant awareness of your surrounding, guns, drugs, alcohol and sex trafficking. All of this without scaring them to death and letting them know that the world is mostly good.  If you follow your gut feelings and stay true to yourself, love yourself and expect that the people you surround yourself will treat you with that same love, life is good. THESE ARE MY RULES… I hope you will create your own: 1.  Drill in general safety rules to the point that they could repeat them in their sleep – make their reactions automatic and without question.  This saved me once that I know of and who knows how many times in life. 2.  Minimize opportunity – most crimes occur because there was an opportunity – an unlocked door, a responsive child.  By being vigilant, involved and aware, you minimize the risk for your children greatly. 3.  Talk openly about current events and ask lots of questions – how they would have handled the situation or what the person hurt could have done differently.  Could this have been avoided all together.  How to recover.  What to do if you are in the situation.  Ideas on how to get out of the situation.  I really like the last one because I get my kids to think and problem solve on their own.  This will help them maneuver all sorts of things in life! 4.  Talk about things at different times of the day and in different settings.  I always read my children first.  Sometimes I ask about something at breakfast or bring something up about a topic.  After school we talk about the day, so sometimes something has happened that allows us to talk about safety.  If we are out in public and see something, there is another chance. 5.  Only talk to the age – leave out things they won’t understand or simplify in the terms of the age appropriate mind.  I test the waters and go a little further than I am comfortable with something to see how they react and if they know what different things are or have heard of them.  This helps find that right balance. AND ABOVE ALL ELSE – If I could pick just one thing to say to them over and over it is: NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.  WHAT SOMEONE HAS DONE TO YOU.  WHAT YOU ARE SCARED TO TELL OR WHAT AN ADULT HAS SAID WILL MAKE THEM HURT YOU.  Come tell Mommy and Daddy.  You cannot tell us a single thing that would make us not love you more and we will help you every time, without question.  NEVER LET BEING SCARED OR ASHAMED KEEP YOU FROM BEING SAFE AND HAPPY.    ...

2013 Holiday Activities in Las Vegas For Kids

By

The Holidays have come again and they really came fast this year!  If you have the time in your Holiday schedule, here are a few 2013 Holiday Activities in Las Vegas that may make this season memorable for you and your family: 1.  The Ethel M Cactus Gardens – My family and I just visited the Cactus Gardens last evening.  We love going to the Gardens, walking the chocolate factory tour and purchasing, what I believe is, the BEST hot chocolate ever!  This is a quick event but really worth it.  Plus admission is free for the whole group.  Their lights come on at 5pm until 10pm through New Years. It does get cold, so I suggest wearing warm coats and gloves.  Check out times and information here.     2.  The Bellagio Gardens – What does the Bellagio have in store for you this year?  Bring the family to the strip and see the beautiful botanical gardens.  Make sure you also stay for the Bellagio Fountains performance.  After years of living in Las Vegas, the fountains are still so beautiful and the Bellagio Gardens smell so fragrant.  You can’t help but get into the spirit.  Plus – bonus – these activities are free to the public, so while your pocket book may be feeling the Holiday, this may fill your spirit. 3.  Mailing Letters to Santa at Macy’s –  Some years ago, Macy’s came up with the brilliant idea to install a very large, red mailbox that goes directly to the Northpole, complete with a desk and Santa postcards.  Your child can bring his/her own letter or write a letter to Santa and mail it right there in the store.  It is really cute to watch the kids compose and deposit their letter to Santa. 4. The Magical Forest at Opportunity Village – Celebrate the holidays with a cherished southern Nevada tradition – the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village! The Magical Forest is a winter wonderland with millions of sparkling lights, nightly entertainment, great food and endless holiday cheer.  Monday Nights are Family Night: Receive one free child admission (ages 3-12) with the purchase of one full price adult admission every Monday night.   5.  The 2013 Holiday Season at Springs Preserve  – Train Rides with Santa, Night at the Museum Polar Express Event, Cookie Decorating and Snow Globe Creation Crafts.  Plus their new “Mad Science Mania” events.  Check out what the Springs Preserve has in store for you this season. 6.  Roos-N-More BEST ANIMAL EXPERIENCE! – Now is a great time to visit the Roos-N-More Zoo.  The weather is cooler and that makes for a more pleasant experience!  There are only three more open zoo days this year – check out the schedule here.  AND, one of them is holiday themed!  Roos-N-More’s Holiday lights and Christmas special: December 21st from 2-6pm is a special Christmas zoo day. We will have raffles, crafts, and interactions with animals. Price of admission is $20 per person. Bring a gift for one of our animals (i.e. blanket, pee pad, toddler toy, dog toy, tilapia fillets, etc) and you will receive a raffle ticket. 7.  Hike / Visit / Enjoy Red Rock, Calico Basin, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead and Mount Charleston – Now that the weather is cooler and snow has arrived on Mount Charleston, it is a beautiful time to take the family on a hike or go sledding.  Our Valley has so many beautiful natural resources just waiting to be explored! 8.  The Nevada State Railroad Museum’s Polar Express “Santa Train” that runs out of Boulder City, NV. It is $5 per seat and Santa visits your child during the trip.  We did this last year and it was fun (better for younger kids) but definitely get there early because it sells out and the line gets bigger and bigger.  Afterwards, we went into Boulder City and had breakfast and then drove down to the Rail Road Tunnel Trail at Lake Mead, just outside of the park entrance for some exercise.   Advanced Tickets are recommended.  This train only runs on the weekends through December 22, 2013. LAST MINUTE ADDITIONS: I keep coming across fun things I want to do before the season is over, so here is a quick add on list.  I hope your holidays are Merry and Bright! The Downtown Container Park – We were here last weekend in the late afternoon and it was so much fun.  Plus they had a local group of carolers singing.  A very pleasant way to enjoy the afternoon with your kids.  And before dark, East Fremont street is more kid friendly. Glittering Lights at The Speedway – I can’t believe I forgot to add this to my post!  A dazzling array of festival lights and sounds. Lemontree Holiday Decor Browsing – Of course I had to put my favorite holiday store in this post.  It always puts me in a happy holiday place! Snow at Town Square – through December 23 Town Square Park Nightly Snowfalls: Monday – Thursday 7pm Friday – Sunday 7pm and 8pm Snow in Las Vegas? That’s right! Town Square brings holiday cheer to Las Vegas in the form of snowflakes with Snow in the Square at Town Square Park. Each show lasts 10 minutes and is choreographed to everyone’s favorite holiday music. Happy Holidays from Moms in...

In fact, pediped® was created to be “the next best thing to bare feet.” Our Foot Health Information provides facts to help you ensure your child will have healthy feet for a lifetime.” The perfect gift for someone who has toddlers or young children! STELLA & DOT – Stella & Dot is offering a great Cyber Monday deal!  But if you are reading this after Monday, don’t worry.  Every gift from Stella & Dot comes in a thoughtful and adorable box – basically just stick a bow on it and it is ready to sit under the tree, in a stocking or as a gift during your celebrated holiday.  I own more Stella & Dot jewelry then I care to admit and people are always complimenting my Stella & Dot purse.  I just love their stuff!  Beautiful gifts!
