Movie night is a favorite at our house! My family always looks forward to an evening of cuddling up together on the couch with our two dogs and a big bowl of buttery popcorn absorbing ourselves in a really good movie.  The problem is by the time we set out to rent a movie, drive to that red-colored kiosk, and stand in line behind several people outside in the cold, the new releases in DVD are always checked out!  What’s left are movies that we’ve already seen or aren’t interesting to us.  We dislike having to change our plans, and shelling out $50 for the entire family to go the movie theater isn’t always an option.  That is until Movies and Candy moved into the neighborhood!  Problem solved! Movies and Candy is an awesome, locally owned video rental store with a wide selection of over 15,000 movie titles from every genre you can imagine. They also have unique candy you can purchase by the pound and if that isn’t enough they have an amazing in house movie theater you can rent for private showings and parties!  Movies and Candy is a dream come true for movie fans!

The store is locally owned and operated by Trevor Layne and his girlfriend, Katie Crispell.  Both Trevor and Katie are super personable. They always have a smile and treat you as if you’re a personal friend recommending movies and helping you find just the right one.  The store has such a friendly vibe, you’ll feel right at home browsing all the different titles and categories discovering new and old favorites.  Trevor with his passion for movies , opened Movies and Candy to house his huge collection of favorites – which range from obscure cult classics to new releases in DVD Henderson, NV.   If you feel like you’ve seen every movie ever made, ask Trevor for a recommendation – he’s great with suggestions!  You can also flip through one of his movie review books on display like “ 1,000 Movies You Must See Before You Die”.  The cost to rent a movie is so reasonable: most movies are only $1 and new releases in DVD are only $2.

Their in-house movie theater has a 90-inch screen with theater-style seats and surround-sound!  It’s perfect for your next party or event!  The cost is affordable:  $20 for two people and $8 for each additional person. The theater rental even comes with all-you-can-eat popcorn!  Birthday parties with your movie choices are fun (call for specific party pricing). Kids love it!

Oh! And did I say candy? You can find the perfect accompaniment to your movie night at Movies and Candy!  Throughout the store there are barrels filled with fun, nostalgic candy –including the hard-to-find-kind like Mary Janes, Lemon Heads, Candy Buttons, Root Beer Barrels,  Boston Baked Beans and  Mallo Cups just to name a few!  My son’s favorite is Zombie Parts; complete with chocolate shaped brains or feet filled with bloody red caramel centers!  If you prefer chips, soda and cookies, they have that too!

I’m so thankful for Movies and Candy.  My kids never knew who Forest Gump was until Movies and Candy opened its doors, and I didn’t have to buy or subscribe to a movie service for them to learn!  Next time you want a good movie night, head to Movies and Candy and you will be thankful too!

Protect Your Family From Food Poisoning When Eating Out

With the recent restaurant scare at Firefly in Las Vegas that sent over 100 people to the hospital with salmonella, I decided to do some research on advice to help minimize your chances that you or your family will get food poisoning when eating out.  Here is what I discovered:

Dr. Oz has published a few very informative articles online including “Restaurant Secrets Putting Your Health At Risk”  and “Shocking Restaurant Secrets – Avoid Food Poisoning” where he talks about different solutions to restaurant practices that can make you sick.  I read them, took my favorites and made more suggestions below.  At the bottom of this post are two links to the articles, that go into more depth on the food poisoning subject.

avoid-food-poisoningRestaurant Lemons Are Dirtier Than The Floor … Dr. Oz discovered five out of five lemons from five different restaurants were coated with germs including mold, bacteria, staph and Candida yeast.  To protect you and your family order lemons on the side and squeeze them yourself, making sure the juice doesn’t touch the lemon rind.  Or, my opinion is don’t order lemons / bring your own.

A dirty bathroom means a dirty kitchen …. ew!  If a restaurant can’t be bothered to keep the toilets and sinks clean, then imagine what their refrigeration and work spaces look like in the kitchen. To protect you and your family, don’t eat anywhere if the trashcan is more than half full.  It indicates that cleanliness is not a priority and regular cleaning is not happening at the restaurant.

Buffets are breeding grounds for bacteria … we all know that, but living in the land of buffets, here is how you can protect yourself and your family from food poisoning: If you want to eat at a buffet, go when it first opens to ensure the highest quality of freshness. For for lunch, aim for noon, and for dinner, go at 5 P.M.
The daily special is a bad choice … because it is often made with aging ingredients that the chef needs to get rid of before they go bad.  To protect you and your family, avoid the daily specials.

You’re More at Risk for Food Poisoning After 8 p.m …because ingredient prep time was hours before, giving bacteria a chance to multiply. To protect yourself and your family only order something grilled, broiled or boiled after 8pm.

Menus Can Be Dirtier Than Toilet Seats … to protect yourself and your family hold the menus by the top corners, minimizing your exposure to bacteria (since most people hold the menus by the bottom).  I would also suggest washing your hands after you order your food or using anti bacterial wipes.

Always Pack the Leftovers Yourself…
remember you have no idea how your food will get into your leftover container; it could be with someone’s bare hands that have just wiped down a table. To protect yourself and your family ask for the to go container and pack your leftovers at your table.

My Favorite Las Vegas Spas

Rejuvenate in Las Vegas? It seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? When most of us think “Vegas”, we  picture parties, action, night life and aspirin to relieve that nagging hangover!  But wait!  Sin City has some of the best spas in the world, and the most elegant  Las Vegas Suites where you can stretch out, unwind and re-energize!  Yes, Las Vegas with its world class spas and hotels is the perfect venue to relax your mind, soul and rejuvenate!

When my friends need some downtime in Vegas, we make our first stop the world-class Canyon Ranch Spa Club inside the Venetian Hotel.  Canyon Ranch offers a glorious respite from the action of the city with incredible offerings!  Try their heavenly Aquavana ™ water therapies with both hot and cold experiences; chose a relaxing massage or facial; exercise in dynamic  fitness classes, and don’t forget to climb their 40 foot rock climbing wall!  I especially love to pamper my legs and feet with their signature Canyon Ranch Foot and Lower Leg Rejuvenation treatment- the perfect remedy to a long day of traveling and too much standing!

Another first-rate treat in Vegas is a visit to Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa located just off the Strip; it’s worth every minute of the short drive!  This $22 million dollar spa is reminiscent of a traditional, country resort with a calming water theme throughout its facility.  When you enter the Spa, a mosaic waterfall greets you.  The sound of a trickling waterfall can be overheard throughout the facial rooms which adds to a soothing experience for Spa patrons.  My girlfriends and I always make time for the Spa’s heavenly Tea wrap to soothe our mind and soul.  The Green Valley Tea wrap begins with a natural body scrub infusion of grape seeds from California’s Napa Valley wine region, followed by a healthful wrap containing green tea, seaweed and ginger root to help the body’s metabolism. This invigorating treatment ends with a soothing massage using pure, natural oils. A visit to Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa is one you will most definitely enjoy!
